“Selfie” is the Photo Theme for January

Selfie – Selfie is slang for Self-Portrait. It is used today to infer a photographic self-portrait taken on a mobile device with a front-facing camera and shared via social media.  In 2013, “Selfie” was word of the year in the Oxford English Dictionary.  How to take a good selfie, fifteen tips…

  1. Choose the right camera angle.
  2. Find your most flattering angle.
  3. Use natural lighting.
  4. Use a selfie stick.
  5. Use Portrait Mode.
  6. Have a genuine smile.  Try smiling with your eyes.
  7. Avoid harsh shadows.
  8. Adjust the camera settings, i.e. use manual mode if you can.
  9. Look at the camera.
  10. Use props.
  11. Watch the background – find an interesting one, or eliminate distractions.
  12. Use accessories like ring lights.
  13. Don’t be self-conscious.
  14. Pose for the camera
  15. Post-process, but don’t over do it.

Create photographs that fit the theme and upload up to five of them to the club’s Monthly Photo Themes flickr group.  Post them during January, not before or after, that way they’ll appear together with other club member’s images.
