The train has captured the spirit of America since 1869 when the east and west portions of the country were forever linked with the completion of the first transcontinental railroad. In addition to serving as a mode of shipping and transportation, the train has come to symbolize freedom and, to some, is a nostalgic and romantic way to travel. The popularity of trains is evidenced by the numerous train museums and restorations throughout the country – there is no shortage of subject matter. In addition to the museums and restorations operating trains can easily be found almost anywhere. When photographing trains in active yards or near operating tracks, be careful. Shooting on private railroad tracks or in operating yards require permission – check before you click that shutter.
